The blackcock lives in Romania in the whole Carpathians area, in coniferous forests at an altitude of over 1,200 meters, while the population density varies greatly from one area to another. Sometimes they lay eggs in mixed forests. According to some estimates, the population of blackcocks in Romania would be 10,000 specimens. Pair estimation is not possible because the blackcock being a polygamous bird, the number of chickens in a “harem” is variable. During mating period, called rotated, the blackcock draws hens’ attention through dance, swelling plumage, opening fan-shaped tail feathers and issuing specific sounds. When rotating, the blackcock is deaf because blood climbs to the head, the wrinkles located on the posterior wall of the ear canal swells a lot and obscure it. In addition, the bony protrusion behind the lower beak covers the ear hole. Hence the name in Hungarian: “siketfajd” (siket = deaf fajd = rooster, tree hen). Once the beak closes, blackcock’s hearing is perfect again.
The hunter goes in the dark at the rotating place and at dawn, he gets closer, by fumbling, to the blackcock singing on the tree branches. This traditional way of hunting has a special charm.
